Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey was founded over a thousand years ago as a Benedictine monastery. It was rebuilt by Edward the Confessor in 1065. The magnificent building seen today was begun by Henry III in the Gothic style in 1245. Countless royal and state weddings and funerals have been held at this very site.

Things you might not know about the Abbey:

The Abbey is a resting place for monarchs such as Henry III, Henry V, and Henry VIII.

From the Tudor era lies Elizabeth I, her half-sister Mary I (aka 'Bloody Mary') and Mary Queen of Scots.

There is a Poet's Corner to remember Chaucer, Dickens, Kiplin, and Jane Austen.

Great scientists, musicians, and politicians are also remembered like Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Handel, and Winston Churchill.
