Got Me Day - 2 Years Old

As of Today, April 23, 2008....
I have been a Burk for 2 years!
Today is my Gotcha Day!
It's the day my mom and dad adopted me.

Many of my Loyal Blow viewers know that on my Gotcha day, my mom tells me the story about how I came to be apart of this family. My birth mom was also a Weimeraner. She looked a lot like me. She had 5 puppies that were all my brothers. When my dad and mom (Ryan and Tricia) went to look at all of us on the farm, they found my four brothers and I near the water spout. They said I was the liveliest one of the bunch! I had to be center of attention. When all my brothers wore out, I was still going! My parents thought I had a lot of personality. Little did they know, I just needed lots and lots of attention. They said when they finally picked me, they took me towards the car. My biological mother went to check on my other brothers as she knew that I was in good hands and would love my new home. I cried and cried and cried. I didn't stop the whole way home until we got to PetSmart. There I was greeted by everyone in the store. Everyone thought I was cute and wanted to hold me!!!! I eventually feel asleep in the buggy. After that, I was brought to my new home!! What a great two years it has been since that day. I wouldn't have it any other way!!!!Here is a photo that shows my GOTCHA DAY. Aren't I Cute!! When you get some time, go through the archives and look at all the fun our family has had over the last two years!!!

Turning Blankets into Shards

Of all the toys I've ever received, my blankets have always been my favorite. I am really good not to rip up mom or dad's blankets. I know exactly which ones belong to me and what I want to do with them. Here was one of my first blankets and the many ways I used it. When I was a puppy (as seen above), I would play tug of war with it. At that time, my dad and mom were pretty strong. I was no match for them. However, over time the tables have turned. They know that I'm the strong and mighty one. Sometimes I let them win because they were kind to let me win when I was a little pup.
As I got a bit older, I used my blanket to sit on for comfort. You know how I like me some comfort!! It was a great place to rest. I would even spread it out and roll around on it. When no one was looking, I would hide my bone inside it by covering it with layers of blanket with my muzzle. It was the perfect hiding spot for my prized possessions.

Last but certainly not least, my favorite way to play with my blanket(s) is to rip it into blanket shards. Though I love the end result, the process is pretty fun too! I make holes and then climb inside to entertain myself. It's a great workout!

The best part is that my dad's ties the shards into many little knots making it impossible to get undone...well almost impossible. Few things are too difficult for Sawyer the Dog to figure out! It just so happens that turning knots back into shards is my speciality. Come over to our house and see sometime. I know you'll be amazed!

A Work of Art

Rawhide bones are my favorite. I espeically love the ones that have knots on the end. You might remember that one Christmas I got 2 peanut butter bones that were 2 feet long. I just loved them!!! When I get one of those bones, my first thought is to break off the knot. Of all the bones I've had, this one turned out to be a true work of art. It took hours to shape it just how I wanted it. I wonder if an art museum would showcase it somewhere. If not, I guess I could just eat it!!

Monkeying Around

One time, my mom brought me a monkey home from work. It was really cool. It wore a pretty blue t-shirt and I carried it around in my mouth for a while like my own little friend. Finally, I decided that the stuffing inside was much more important. So I thought of some creative ways to rip it out like making holes by the appendages. The funniest way I got the stuffing out was by pulling it from his mouth. (Of course I had to rip off his red mouth to get inside as you can see). It almost looked like he was talking to me. What a great friend to sacrifice himself for my entertainment. At the End of the Day, he was still the same old friend laying around. However he wasn't as "full of it" as he used to be. But that's okay....I like it better that way!

Destroying Toys is Hard to Do

I've had so many toys come and go in my lifetime. One thing I can say is that it's a lot like breaking up, it's hard to do. Thus the song which you can learn more about at this site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaking_Up_Is_Hard_to_Do_(song)
In the mean time, take a gander at this photo of me napping in between my toy destruction. I believe in working hard and then sleeping hard. Once I am all rested up, I am ready to start my path of terror. I showed this red toy just who was the boss. You should know the name by now. It's SAWYER THE DESTROYER!!!!

Boomer Sooner

One of my favorite ropes of all time was my Red and White rope. I called it Boomer Sooner since my mom is an OU Alumni, which makes me a legacy to the Sooners! This special rope had three red balls to chew on. It was great when I was a teething puppy. But, it was even better as I grew up. I realized that I could rip off the red balls and tear the rope into many pieces. Sometimes people don't like to play with large toys. So I decided they might play more if the toy was smaller. After I downsized, I would take the toy and put it in some one's hand or drop it at their feet. It was the perfect idea for this OU Sooner!

Path to Destruction

Destroying the Frisbee wasn't as easy as it seemed it would be. It took a lot of hard work. For this toy's destruction, I have to plan out my method of attack. As you could probably tell from yesterday, I used my paws to hold it down while I nibbled on it. I would also bend it back and forth with my mighty jaws. After softening the rubber, I would than take big, huge, ginormous bites to chip away at the Frisbee. At first there were just teeth marks, but the hard work finally paid off when little shards of Frisbee started crumbling to the ground. Here is some of the progress I made. Once I got this far, it was all down hill. I was able to completely destroy this toy in Sawyer fashion. Man, sometimes I'm stronger than I realize!!

Frisbee Shisbee

My parents got me a Frisbee one time from Sonic. It was a crazy Frisbee. It had a light in the middle that lite up when someone threw it. It also made weird noises as it zoomed through the air. My mom and dad kept telling me that I needed to chase it in the back yard, but I had a better idea. Since it was made of plastic, I decided to demolish it with my Sawyer the Destroyer skills. Did you know that rubber is extremely chewy? It was a real change, but I gave it my best. Tomorrow I will show you what I was able to do with my bare paws and sharp teeth. You won't want to miss it!!!

Rope-n-ball combo

{Sung to tune of Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair from Musical South Pacific}

"I'm gonna rip that ball right off of that rope, I'm gonna rip that ball right off of that rope, I'm gonna rip that ball right off of that rope, and send it on it's way."

One time, I received a toy that was a rope with a tennis ball in the middle. Now before this I had a tennis ball and a rope separately. Therefore it didn't seem right that they be together. Within an hour, I had ripped the covering off the tennis ball as you can begin to see her. Needless to say, I was able to tear the ball off the rope in no time. They don't call me SAWYER THE DESTROYER for nothing!!!!

Little Yellow Fellow

At the beginning of this series on my toys and my life as Sawyer the Destroyer, I showed you my first gift from my Uncle Scott. It was a blue dog. Though I loved playing with it, the best part was discovering the squeaker and stuffing hidden inside.

When I got a little bigger, I missed my Blue Dog so my parents got me a Yellow Fellow that looked just like him (well except he was yellow). This time around I was bigger and badder (you know in a good way). I was able to rip out the squeaker and stuffing in no time. I was no longer a pup. I had learned from past experiences and continued to develop my destroyer skills. Thanks mom and dad for showing me how much I had matured over the years!!! Keep the toys a-comin'!

My Blue Rope

The Blue rope was one of my first toys. It was probably one of the longest lasting toys I had. I think I played with it for over a year. After hours and hours of tug of war and fetch, it became ratty and smelly. My parents finally decided to get rid of it. Before it made the final descent into the silver trash can, I took a minute to remember the good times that we had together and mourn the loss of a great friend. So long, blue rope, so long!

No match for me

Just like the bath rug, I liked the comfort but did not think the doggie pillow was an alternative to my parent's bed. So, I did what had to be done... I ripped it to shreds. Unlike my plastic football, the doggie bed was not as easy to devour. It was a very strategic process that took planning, determination, and consistency. I realized that to get to the stuffing-filled center, I would have to find a way to get in. Since I don't have thumbs, I was unable to slide open the zipper. Therefore, I decided I needed to tear it off. Over a few weeks, I gnawed at the zipper until one day I tore it completely off. From there, I quickly pulled out all the stuffing from inside the mesh cover inside. That part was easy and super fun. All in all, I was able to destroy the doggie pillow and secure my place on the bed. What can I say, I'm dedicated to comfort!

I "knead" my Pillow

Some of you may remember my big pillow. Shortly after I stopped sleeping in my cage, my parents thought that I could sleep on a doggie pillow (instead of the bed with them). I tried it out for a while. It was great for a nap, but not a long night's sleep. I realized that it was also super soft and perfect for kneading.
Though I know most dogs do not knead, it is so much fun. It is so comfy and it puts you right at ease. Many of the times, it helps you go to sleep like a dream!!!

P.S. You may be wondering what my pillow has to do with toys and Sawyer the Destroy. Tune in tomorrow for the answer.

The answer is...

My blue bath rug!

My dad's old bath rug from his bachelor days quickly became the piece de resistance inside my cage. When I was little, my parents put it on the bottom of my cage since it was very soft. They knew I liked comfort!! Though I liked laying on it, I decided I did not want to sleep inside my cage any more. So I quickly tore it to shreds one day. Yesterday's photo was the only remaining piece of it. Finally, after my parents realized I wasn't comfortable sleeping in the cage by the way I would cry all during the night, they finally gave in and let me sleep in the bed. I'm a little sorry that the blue rug had to be sacrificed for me to get my way, but I can get over it. Especially when I'm sleeping in my King size bed next to my wonderful parents!

Name that toy

Can you guess what this toy use to be?

This is the last remaining shard of this particular toy. I'll give a few hints to help you figure it out....

It was not made to be a toy.

It use to sit my cage to make it more comfortable to lie on.

It usually goes in the bathroom.

Do you think you know what it is? If so, post a reply to my blog. The answer will be revealed on tomorrow's blog spot. Good luck!!!!

Plastic Pig Skin

When my mom worked at the hospital, she got a plastic football. It looked like a real pig skin, but it was slippery and slick. Though it was a little intimidating at first since I'd never had a toy like it before, it quickly became one of the easiest destructions I've ever had. What can I say...they don't call my Sawyer the Destroyer for nothing.

Football Anyone

Like I said a few days ago, I LOVE FOOTBALL. When my Uncle Scott came over to visit, I could always talk him into to playing football. Even though I flattened my USA football, he was still willing to play with me. We would play catch a lot, but most of all we'd play tug of war.
Sometimes I gave him a run for his money. Not only do I have jaws of steel and muscular legs, I have determination. That's what makes me a fierce competitor. Maybe the NFL will pick my up for the Dallas Cowboys. Well, probably not...But a dog can dream!

P.S. Here are the last remaining shards of the USA football. Sometimes, I'm stronger than I realize.

Big Friend & New friend

Do you remember Sawyer's 'Big Friend'? If not, go to the Archives under August 2006 and look for Aug 22-24 for more details. Here are some snip-it's of information taken from those days written by his mommy:
" This was the first companion that Sawyer got when he moved to the Burk's House. Directly after he was adopted, Sawyer and his parents went to PetSmart. This toy was picked out for him to sleep and play with. Since the beginning, Sawyer has enjoyed the company of his Big Friend!!"

"Sawyer loved his "Big Friend" so much that he ripped him to pieces (literally). He took out the squeaker and some of the stuffing. Therefore we finally decided to replace him "Big Friend" with a "New Friend"..... "When give the choice between the two, Sawyer gladly selected his "Big Friend." He is such a loyal pal!!"
Over time, Sawyer has had several of these friends. We eventually have to start naming them by the number. Like #3 and #4. With each friend, he much sure to give them lots of love and attention. He even invented new ways to play with them and get the squeaker out. Though many friends have come and gone, his original Big Friend will always be his favorite Best Friend.
